What is coaching?
How do you define coaching?
What is good coaching? A process during which the coach uses certain types of questions to help clients 1) determine solutions that are most appropriate for them, 2) set related goals, and 3) plan action steps to reach those goals. The coach does not tell the client what to do, but merely facilitates his/her unique journey toward those solutions.
How do you coach someone?
Traditionally, people think of ‘sports coaching’ whenever they hear the word ‘coaching’. This involves telling and showing an athlete what to do. However, there is a different type of coaching where individuals are enabled to gradually find solutions to life/work problems that they are experiencing. It involves a whole process, but essentially, the coach asks certain questions to help the client identify their current position/problem and where they would like to be. Thereafter, questions are asked to help the person plan what they are going to do and when. The individual’s progress is monitored throughout the coaching process. Therefore, accountability is a huge part of the process.
What are coaching skills?
A coach needs to be courageous as you may at times need to ask a client difficult questions and give challenging feedback to enable them to move toward their potential. Secondly, you need to be reliable and trustworthy. Furthermore, empathy, objectivity, active listening (clarifying if you do not understand, or reflecting back to the client) and an ability to focus on the process and help the client to focus on their goals, are also important.
What are the principles of coaching?
Coaching is not about telling, it is about providing a safe space for someone to find their where they can find personal/work solutions that are applicable to them and then facilitating their process to reach that goal. In essence, you are like a thinking partner/mirror, but you do not impress your own ideas and views on the client.
A Coach:
Enables the client to keep their focus on the solution/goal and not the past.
Does not judge the coachee (client).
Inspires self-confidence in the coachee as the coachee takes action steps and learn in the process.
Is willing to ask the client difficult questions to promote their awareness.
Motivates the client to take responsibility and action when they aspire to reach their goals.

However, it does help if the coach has experience in or knowledge of the general milieu that the client finds challenging to navigate. Furthermore, knowledge of systems and other theories in psychology would be helpful. Finally, coaching is more about skills and attitude than experience.
